Nima Day 2: In Perspective

Day two was all about making the kids feel comfortable around each other. We started off class with the WAGI greeting that they learned yesterday and they seemed super eager get started with the day’s lesson. The lesson consisted of teaching the kids the difference between the feelings one feels in their heart versus the thoughts one has in their head.

When asked what problems the children faced in Ghana, they told us that they were afraid of fights, power outages, traffic, mad men, trash pile up and water pipe malfunctions.

Yesterday, I cracked my phone and found out there was no way to fix it. I was tempted to get down on myself and have a pity party but then I realized my material problem was nothing compared to the hardships these children faced every day of their lives. Why would I become upset about not having a phone for 17 days when some of the children in our class feared for their safety and well being on a daily basis?

Emmanuel and I also started the sticker system before the lesson which really inspired the kids to participate, help each other, and ask questions. We also had the kids begin journaling about their experiences in class and some of the things they said were truly inspiring.

“I am happy because of you”-Sheriff (age 9)

“I like the way you teach”- Helina (age 8)

“God bless WAGI labs”-Abdul Samed (age 10)

  • Numerous problems as outlined, but yes we can. We can help solve them in our own small way, thanks to the mentoring. Cheers.
